The short version
- We don't store the content you analyze. The messages, screenshots, voice recordings, transcripts, and chats you put into Attune are used to generate your result and are not saved on our servers. Your results are kept on your device.
- Some content is sent to trusted providers to make the features work—an AI provider to generate coaching and analysis, and a transcription provider to turn voice recordings into text. They process it to deliver the feature; they don't sell it, and our AI provider doesn't use it to train its models.
- We store a small amount of account data—your sign-in details, your partner list, your subscription status, and the derived insights you choose to sync between your own devices.
- Analytics never includes your messages, screenshots, or relationship content—only how the app is used—and you can switch it off in Settings.
- You can delete everything from inside the app at any time, or by emailing us.
1. Who we are
Attune (the "Service") is provided by HandleBy LLC ("Attune," "we," "us"), a Delaware limited liability company. This policy covers the Attune iPhone app, the Attune Extractor macOS companion app, and this website. For any privacy question, contact us at hi@theattune.app.
2. How Attune handles your content
The single most important thing to understand is the difference between content that passes through our systems to produce a result and data that we actually keep.
Content you analyze is processed, not stored by us. When you use Attune, Unpack, Chat, Sync, the Conversation Coach, screenshot import, or iMessage analysis, the text, images, audio, or transcript involved is sent to our backend and on to the relevant provider only to generate your result. We do not save that content on our servers, and we do not write it to our logs. The result that comes back is stored on your device, in the app—not on our servers.
Voice recordings. When you import a voice memo for the Conversation Coach, the recording is sent securely to our transcription provider to convert speech into text. We do not store the audio, and the transcription provider processes it in a zero-retention mode, so it isn't kept there either. (Live dictation, where you speak instead of type, is handled on your device.)
The Mac companion. Attune Extractor reads your Messages history locally on your Mac, read-only, after you grant macOS permission. To score your relationship over time, it sends the relevant message text to our AI provider for analysis. Your contacts are read on your Mac to show names instead of phone numbers and are not sent anywhere. The resulting insights (scores, trends, patterns)—not your raw messages—are what sync to your iPhone if you sign in to the same account.
3. Service providers we share data with
Attune relies on a small number of vetted providers ("sub-processors") to run the Service. Each receives only what it needs, over encrypted connections, and is bound by its own terms:
- Anthropic (Claude AI)—generates your rewrites, decodes, coaching reports, check-ins, chat replies, and relationship analysis from the text, screenshots, and transcripts you submit. Anthropic does not use content submitted through its API to train its models.
- ElevenLabs—transcribes imported voice recordings into text. We send these requests in zero-retention mode, so ElevenLabs does not store the audio or transcript or use them to improve its models.
- Vercel—hosts our backend. Your requests pass through its servers to be processed; it does not store your content on our behalf.
- Upstash—the database that holds our account and sync data (see section 4).
- Apple—provides Sign in with Apple and processes subscription payments through the App Store. We never receive your payment card details.
- Mixpanel—receives anonymous product-analytics events (see section 5).
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers. Attune has no advertising model.
4. What we store, and what we can see
In our database we keep only what is needed to run your account and move your own insights between your own devices:
- Your account email and, if you provide one, your display name;
- Your Apple identifier, if you use Sign in with Apple;
- A securely hashed version of your password, if you sign up with email (we never store your password itself);
- Your partner roster—the names you add for the people you're tracking;
- Your subscription status;
- The derived insights you choose to sync—relationship scores, trends, named patterns, coaching summaries, and a short writing-style profile. These are generated from your conversations; they do not include your full message transcripts.
Being straight with you: the account and synced data above is stored in a form our systems can read, so we can operate, back up, and support the Service. It is not end-to-end encrypted. It is protected by encryption in transit and at rest and by access controls, and we access it only to run and support the Service or where required by law. Most of your activity—your Attune/Unpack results, transcripts, coaching reports, and history—lives only on your device, not on our servers.
5. Analytics
We use Mixpanel to understand how the app is used and how it performs, so we can improve it. Here is exactly what that means:
- What we collect: product-usage events—which features you use, onboarding and subscription steps, screens viewed, and app opens—along with a device/session identifier, your app version and platform, and a few high-level profile traits such as your attachment style, how many partners you've added, and whether you have an active subscription. If you sign in to an Attune account, your events are linked to your account identifier—and your account email and display name are attached to that analytics profile—so your own iPhone and Mac aren't counted as two different people. If you enable notifications, a push token is stored so we can send them.
- What we never collect: your messages, drafts, transcripts, screenshots, voice recordings, contacts, partner or contact names, or any relationship content. Analytics never sees what you actually write or say.
- We do not use advertising identifiers (such as Apple's IDFA), we don't track you across other apps or websites, and we don't sell analytics data.
- You can turn analytics off at any time in Settings (iPhone and Mac). Turning it off stops Attune from sending product-usage analytics from your device. A small number of account and billing events—such as creating your account, signing in, or a subscription change—are still recorded on our servers to operate the Service; these never include your messages or relationship content.
6. Security
All connections between the apps, our backend, and our providers use TLS encryption. Passwords are stored only as salted, computationally-hard hashes (scrypt). Your sign-in session token is kept in the device Keychain. Data in our database is encrypted at rest by our provider. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data in proportion to how sensitive it is.
7. How long we keep it
- Content you analyze: not retained by us—it exists only for as long as it takes to generate your result.
- Account and synced data: kept until you delete it or delete your account. Inactive sign-in sessions expire after 180 days.
- On-device data: stays on your device until you delete the app, remove a partner, or delete your account from within the app.
- Providers retain data only as their own policies allow; our AI provider's retention of submitted content is transient and is not used to train its models.
8. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, and to object to certain processing. You can exercise the core of these directly:
- Delete your account and all its data—in the iPhone app, open Settings and tap Delete account; in the Mac app, open Settings and choose Delete account. This permanently removes your account, partner roster, synced insights, subscription record, and sessions from our servers, and erases the app's data on that device. It cannot be undone.
- Turn off analytics—Settings, on either app.
- Access, correct, or export your data, or ask a question about any of the above—email hi@theattune.app and we'll help. We won't discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription, because subscriptions are billed by Apple. To stop billing, cancel in your App Store subscription settings.
9. Children
Attune is intended for adults and is not directed to anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a minor has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Payments
Subscriptions are sold and billed through Apple's App Store. We receive confirmation that a subscription is active (the product and its expiry) so we can unlock the app across your devices; we never receive or store your payment card or billing details.
11. International users
We operate from the United States, and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. By using Attune, you understand that your information may be processed in the U.S. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Attune evolves. When we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use of Attune after an update means you accept the revised policy.
